Phoenix
Rising
[July 29]
Jessica Phoenix the granddaughter of
Cliff Ferguson [Sen #116] is once again on the rise. Forced to
withdraw from the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the field of Equestrian
Eventing do to an injury her horse sustained she has persevered and
is now short listed for Canada's eventing squad and the World Games,
with sights set on the 2012 Olympics. The biggest hurdle Jessica and
her horse face is funding. To compete in Beijing Jessica had to
raise almost half of the estimated $100,000 cost. So to help her
continue on, a fund raiser BBQ is scheduled for Aug 15th. Tickets
are $20.00. If you enjoy a drive in the country you can find out
more on her website at

How Fire Fighters Die
[June10/10]
The National Fire Protection
Assocaition (NFPA) collects data on all firefighter fatalities in
the U.S. that resulted from injuries or illnesses that occurred
while the victims were on-duty. While the statistics are U.S. stats
they paint a compelling picture of the risks to firefighters.
The largest number of fatalities, 35
deaths, were due to sudden cardiac death. Sudden cardiac death
accounts for a higher proportion of the deaths among older
firefighters, as might be expected. More than half of the
firefighters over age 40 who died in 2009 died of heart attacks or
other cardiac events. The youngest victim of sudden cardiac death
was aged 24.

EMPLOYMENT LAW E-BULLETIN [Dec 24/09]
As part of their
firefighters news/bulletin Lancaster House has published an overview
of the litigation between Etobicoke Firefighters and Local 3888.
Many have discussed it around the kitchen table in the fire hall
without having all the facts, and without being clear on what it
entailed - if you are interested in the facts, an overview of the
litigation can be found on the
